Travelling the world with a film and content producer. – 09

In this episode, Canadian film and content producer, Jay Ferguson shares:

His love of travel, and how having the world as a creative playground can be inspiring, challenging and ultimately rewarding.

How when he first started out as a cinematographer, and the project was in another country, he would shoot it for free just to travel there.

How if you like to travel, film and content creation can be a really great way to see the world.

How travelling to shoot in new locations gives you a unique POV that is created by being to a place for the very first time.

The perks & privilege of getting to experience locations from a very intimate point of view.

In the film business there’s this thing, it’s like a pass, a creative guarantee, if you’re going to go be daring enough to film in a foreign location, you’re going to get access to the things that no one else can have access to.

How he developed a system that allowed his team to travel all over the world…despite there being little to no money.

How when you don’t have money you need to be prepared and adaptable.

Shooting in India: Despite the low budget challenges, stealth shooting and thinking on your feet were gifts to the productions.

Shooting in France: Some of the challenges faced when you step out of the safety net of your own language and culture.

What is a ‘Fixer’? It’s a perfect term for the film business because there is always ludicrous stuff that you have to deal with, or fix.

How locations appear in scripts: Guidestones, the web series, was a thriller, so when Jay found out that you could shoot in Chernobyl, he wrote the disaster into the script.

Shooting in Chernobyl: Jay will never forget shooting in that unique location for many reasons. For one, the Fixer had a “geiger counter, and secondly, the sound guy said it was the quietest place he had ever heard in his entire life—no living sound at all!
